Event 1 : COSMOLOGICAL ELEMENTS #2

In Exobiotanica, artist Makoto Azuma used plants to figure out “how life came to be” and “what are [the] specific elements and conditions that allow for life” (Claudia Schnugg).  Makoto sent plants into the universe to see how they interacted with air outside of the earth. This was so interesting to me and I loved looking at the beautiful photos from this piece. This really relates to DESMA 9 because it involves the use of art to figure out questions regarding biological science, specifically evolution. It also showed the way art is needed to answer certain questions in the science and technology fields.

I also found the mining asteroid piece by Michele Boulogne very interesting and enjoyed learning about the important questions that come along with scarcity in regards to space. I left a comment during this presentation. I also included my attendance screenshot.

It says "I feel like due to the way our society is set up already, scarcity would be the number one issue when dealing with mining and extracting minerals from asteroids. It seems like the larger and more rich companies and people would be the only ones able to accomplish anything."

It was interesting when artist Rhanjit Batnagar, showed us how nasa set out to turn images into sound. This reminded me of what we learned this week, specifically about MRI’s. MRI’s produce images of body parts and organs by using strong radiofrequency. The images given to  NASA voyager, were put through somewhat of the same type of process which reminded me of what I learned this week. As professor Vesna stated in the chat, “all visualizations on nano level are output of frequency and data” (Vesna). This process was very interesting because of the way it was produced on tapestry. Obviously this relates to the overall theme of our class too, which is how artwork and imagery is directly related to science and technology. It was really interesting to see how this works and the tapestry was beautiful too.
